KUGB Student Championships 2009
Harry Cuddy and Ben Whalen, represented the LSKC at the KUGB Student Nationals on Saturday 21st November.
Both competed at a very high standard. Ben who has just returned after having time away from karate just missed out on a semi-final spot because an earlier injury restricted his movement. Harry how ever made his way through to the finals with some excellent fighting, his semi-final was very exciting with 20 seconds of the fight left and 1/2 a point down he unleashed a mawashi-geri to his opponents head earning him a full point(Ippon)and the match. He lost the finals by 1/2 a point, it was a very close fought final.
Later that evening Harry recieved his call-up to join the National Squad for the European Championships in Austria 28-29th November.
Well done guys, and congratulations Harry!
Northern Regional Karate Championships 2009.
Ethan who has had very good year in competition karate, once again fought his way to the finals of the Northern Regional Karate Championships. The finals was close fought contest with neither fighter wanting to make any mistakes, but with Ethan putting constant pressure on his opponent, it deemed enough to get the decision therefore winning the match and the competition.
Mathew Humphries also finished in third place after been beaten in his semi-final.
Harry Cuddy who was fighting very well in his first round match was in the end disqualified after unleashing a tremendous front foot Jodan Mawashi Geri (roundhouse kick) to the head and knocking his opponent off his feet.
The rest of the 11 man squad well in there events and hopefully will do better next time.
Well done everyone, OSS

KUGB Youth National Championships 2009.
Leeds Shotokan Karate club members shine at KUGB Youth Nationals Championships, Chesterfield.
Matthew Humphries in action at Youth Nationals....
6 LSKC members entered this competition, all of whom put in good performances.
The competition started off with the Kata eliminations, though kumite ( fighting )
is what many competitors prefer to enter all club members were entered in this
catagory and performed quite well, but did not make the finals.
After Kata came the kumite events. Again the club was well represented in this event.
The best performances came from Ethan Parsons and Matthew Humphries who both
fought their way through the elimination rounds to reach the finals,
Ethans' movement, timing and counter-punching proved to be too much for his opponents.
He went on to win the event in style. Matthew had to work very hard in his final,
at the end of the 2 minute bout it was a draw, so an extra minute was given to decide a winner,
if there was no score at the end then the referee and judges had to make a decision.
Because Matthew took the fight to his opponent the decision went his way. The club came away
from these championships with 2 Youth Champions.
Congratulations to everyone who took part and keep up the good work, pretty soon that win will come.
May I also thank Stephen Cuddy for all his help on Saturday, his input and coaching for our comptitors
in my absence has not gone unoticed.

The 9th City of Liverpool Youth Championships 2009.
Another fine perfomance from the LSKC junior team. The club members were still riding high from the Nationals.Though the kata events didn't go too well for the majority of them, we still had 2 members that reached the finals.BradleyClaybourn got 3rd place in his final and Michael Gale took fourth place in his.
Again some very good performances from all our kumite entrants. Charlie Cuddy took to the mat for the first time in kumiteand put in a tremendous effort to reach the semi-finals where he was narrowly beaten, had he won he would have met his team mate James Humphries who is attaining the winning habit in the finals. James won his finals with good timing and well executed counter-punching. Eliott Parsons and Harry Cuddy both reach the semi-finals of there respective categories. Harry who is carrying an injury and studying very hard had a very good and competitive semi-final round, although he lost. Eliott lost his round on a decision, and both picked up 3rd place.
Well done to everyone who represented LSKC.

the LSKC squad members. All 7 club members put in some very good performances.
Charlie cuddy who has made 2 Kata finals to press just missed out on his third.
James Humphries was making his second appearance in Kumite, gave another good account
of himself, obviously one to watch for the future.
Harry Cuddy, just coming back from injury fought very well in his elimination rounds,
winning one of those by Ippon (full point) with a kick to the head
Michael Gale who has been training like a demon and looking very sharp, made the Kata finals.
Well done Michael, you going in the right direction.
In the children’s kumite we had three very good competitors in all three age categories.
During the eliminations they all had some very tough fights to reach the finals.
First up was Ethan Parsons, with his movement he proved to be too hard to handle and won
his final comfortably, excellent fighting.. Champ. Well done.
Matthew Humphries was next up, again Matthew progressed through the elimination in fine
style. He was know competing in the finals for the second year running, sadly on this occasion
he was beaten into second place and picking up silver.
Eliott Parsons was our last finalist. Eliott had an amazing semi-final round to reach the finals,
two very strong and very sharp counter-punches put him in the finals.
Everyone had high hopes of him winning the finals but alas it wasn’t to be,
he lost in the finals and picked up a silver medal. Congratulations to everyone, and keep up
the good work.

Congratulations to everyone who took part at the 24th Kyu Grade Championships. For some it was their first time in competition. The fact that they even took part was an achievement in itself. Everyone gave it their best shot and can only learn from the experience. As was expected, nerves played a big part on the day.
Vetran Charlie Cuddy reach his second Kata final this year. Performing Heian Sandan he was awarded fourth place. One of our up and coming stars Bradley Claybourn making his debut in competition reach the semi-finals of the individual kumite event but was narrowly beaten, he was joint-third over all. Another person making his debut was Nathan Wyspianski who did really well in both the kata and ippon Kumite events, Nathan reached the quarter-finals in both categories, putting in some fine performances along the way. As was expected, nerves played a big part on the day.
